Representatives from various IBBY sections around the world gathered for the event to celebrate the Honour List Diploma recipients, including three honorees from the Philippines: Si Cielo at Ang Asong Si Stella (Cielo and the Dog Named Stella) by Cristina Pantoja-Hidalgo and Eugene Evasco for writing; Agawan Base (Steal the Base), by Jericho Moral for illustration; and Rene O. Villanueva’s Bum Tiyaya Bum (Philippine Nursery Rhymes, poems, and verses) by Angela Narciso Torres for translation.
Pantoja-Hidalgo and Evasco’s Si Cielo at ang Asong si Stella was among 68 titles honored for the writing category. Published by Chikiting Books, the storybook was illustrated by Tokwa Peñaflorida.
Moral’s Agawan Base was one of 55 titles honored for the illustration category. A visual artist from Markina City, Moral created the illustrations for Agawan Base – a whimsical story about birds and insects written by r Jez Martin de Veyra, and published by the Center for Art, New Ventures & Sustainable Development (CANVAS).
For the translator’s category which included 61 honorees, the Philippines’ Angela Narciso Torres was recognized for her work on Rene Villanueva’s Bum Tiyaya Bum, a collection of Filipino rhymes and verses for the very young, published by Tahanan Books for Young Readers.
The IBBY Honour List is a biennial selection of outstanding, recently published books, honoring writers, illustrators, and translators from IBBY member countries. This prestigious event is one of the most widespread and effective ways of furthering IBBY’s objective of encouraging international understanding through children’s literature.
The 2024 Honour List includes 184 books in its catalogue, written in 52 different languages coming from 59 countries. Important considerations in selecting the Honour List titles are that the books are representative of the best in children's literature from the country and that they are suitable for publication throughout the world.
The selection provides insight into the diverse cultural, political, and social settings in which children live and grow, and that it can be used by those involved with developing educational and literacy programs and publishing initiatives to develop exemplary “international” collections.
In a statement, IBBY Philippines president Kristine Mandigma commended the awardees from the Philippines. “I am incredibly proud of our immensely talented authors, illustrators, translators, and publishers. As part of IBBY Philippines’ mission, we are committed to supporting initiatives that elevate Philippine children’s literature on the global stage. We are pleased to know that they will be showcased internationally. It is time for the world to discover the stories and the books produced by Filipinos.”
IBBY Philippines is mandated to fulfill IBBY’s commitment to bring books and children together. It supports literacy initiatives to promote love for reading and children’s books in schools, communities, and among the general public. Its flagship projects are opening a research library on children’s literature, publishing and funding a professional journal review of children’s books, and organizing seminars, workshops, and conferences on children’s literature for authors, illustrators, translators, publishers, teachers, parents, and readers.
