Max Eigenmann and Redd Arcega in a scene from 'Ninang' |
Any work of controversial director and writer Darryl Yap hits like a truck, including "Ninang" currently causing a commotion online.
Episode 1 of the series titled "Pinakamahina" already has 133k views with a bullet on the VinCentiments channel on YouTube as of this writing.
On the VinCentiments content page on Facebook, touted the home of hardcore Philippine short films. "Pinakamahina" proves itself strong with mighty 12 million views within two days after upload.
As gleaned from the comments section on the platforms, "Ninang" has got many viewers shocked; then, recovering, just raving over its brazen statement about lusting for someone half or double your age.
Max Eigenmann plays Jen, the best friend of a woman whose son, Alfred (Redd Arcega) has got a thing for her in the last seven years. That would not have raised eyebrows and blood pressure, except that Jen is twice her grandson's age.
We liked it that even when Darryl put the torrid kissing scene upfront in the maiden installment, its shock value (both for viewers and in the context of the story) is hardly diminished.
Yet, that is not the highlight in the story, no, sir.
We dare any viewer not to let out a gasp or not, er, grab on to something (wink, wink) to steady themselves in the last scene.
Is the series making a statement on not being confined by norms? Or are we reading too much into something that actually happens a lot in real life---save that it's not often talked about openly?
These and more are the kind of questions "Ninang" provokes.
And to think we're just on episode one...
