Teen actress Xia Vigor has been invited by University of Oxford in the United Kingdom for an exclusive program wherein she, along with students from different countries, will have learning sessions on critical thinking and public speaking.
However, it is scheduled for December 2026---just when Xia and the cast of Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry "2nd Miracle in Cell No. 7" would be in the thick of promoting the movie leading to the Grand Parade, Opening Day and Gabi ng Parangal.
"These are two big things happening in my life and I wouldn't want to choose one over the other," she told us in an interview. "I'll just go to Oxford then immediately come back for MMFF."
Xia thinks she was selected by Oxford on strength of her being the first child ambassador of Save the Children Philippines and the youngest ambassador for World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Philippines. Some of the Asian countries that will be sending students are Malaysia, Singapore and Japan.
As far as Xia knows, she is the only Filipina to have qualified. And University of Oxford will sponsor everything---from airfare to accommodation---so, really, it would be insane not to go.
"The things I will learn there I'll bring with me my entire life," she said. "Kahit one week lang yon, I'll be a sponge. Ayokong palampasin ang pagkakataon."
"2nd Miracle" is no less momentous. Recall that the movie before it, "Miracle in Cell No. 7," emerged as top box-office draw in MMFF 2019, upsetting the initial lead of an entry starring a perennial festival favorite.
Xia said as of interview that she's yet to read the full script for "2nd Miracle." Still, she already knows it
will have a sort of "prequel-sequel" story in relation to the first "Miracle," an adaptation of the South Korean dramedy.
Asked to comment on some people's opinion that the local movie industry would be better off doing "original" stories versus adaptations, Xia gave practical answer.
"Sana bigyan nila ng chance yung movie," she said. "Magaling ang writer ng '2nd Miracle' and we will work hard to make a movie na tatatak sa puso ng mga Pilipino."
