Inah Evans okay with sobriquet

Inah Evans

If a stranger happens to pass by and call out "Baklang kanal!" to Inah Evans somewhere, expect her to look back, smile and reply ever so sweetly with "Yes?"

"Kasi di ba ang ibig sabihin nung term, ugaling squatter or datingang jejemon?" she said at a recent press conference for her upcoming concert. "Eh yun naman talaga ako."

While it may be seen by most as having negative connotation, the comedienne saw it as a stepping stone and used it accordingly.

"Yun ang minahal ng tao sa akin," she said. "Wala akong balak magpaka-plastik. No pretense, that's me."

And while many assume the moniker was given to her by Vice Ganda, who once stood as her manager, it just isn't so.

"It was given to me by a friend, a handsome guy," he said. "I was going to this high-end place but he told me in jest, 'Sobrang kanal mo, di ka bagay don!'"

Her stage name may sound classy but Inah did not grow up with silver spoon in her mouth. On the contrary, she lived "sa isang barong-barong, sa gilid ng kanal."

"Walang kuryente, walang ilaw," she said. "Papasok kami na lukot yung damit, hindi nakakaligo. Yung nanay ko, nag-iigib ng tubig sa bumbero."

All a thing of the past now, to be sure. These days, with fate being kind to her, Inah lives in a condominium unit near restaurants and food stalls where she satisfies all the cravings denied her before.

Despite these things, Inah would be first to object if you tell her she's already "made."

"Hindi naman kasi talaga. I'm the type who'd always think someone's better than me," she said. "Basta okay na sa akin na may work ako."

That's another thing, right there: Whenever talk about competition is brought up, Inah would quickly douse water on the subject by recalling what Vice Ganda once told her-

"Marami namang ilaw at malaki ang entablado---kasya tayong lahat."

"The Baklang Kanal Show Live!" produced by Happy Events by Deegee Inc. is on July 10 at Music Museum.
