| Scene from 'Backrooms' |
We knew even midway through the advanced screening of "Backrooms" last week at SM Megamall that it would do well at the tills, seeing how viewers sat on the edge of their seats up to the chilling conclusion.
True enough, despite formidable competition from other big and much more ballyhoed Hollywood films, the thriller sits pretty at number one, dominating the global box-office on strength of word-of-mouth buzz.
"Backrooms" shattered expectations during its opening weekend, earning US$118 million worldwide. It delivered the biggest opening weekend in A24 history, the largest debut ever for an original horror film, and the biggest launch ever for a first-time filmmaker (Kane Parsons).
But unlike the other major Hollywood releases, "Backrooms" will only be shown in a limited number of cinemas in the Philippines starting June 3. This is why CreaZion Studios, A24’s official partner for the movie in our country is encouraging horror fans to secure tickets early and plan their viewing with friends before screenings sell out.
"Backrooms" has become a cultural phenomenon of sorts. Born from the viral internet horror series that amassed hundreds of millions of views worldwide, the film transforms the unsettling mythology of endless yellow hallways and impossible spaces into a terrifying cinematic experience that audiences have been discussing, dissecting, and daring each other to watch.
We liked the way the movie keeps you guessing what would happen next. There is bated-breath anticipation in every turn, fueled by strange sound or even silence, by shadow and silhouette. It is said that the mind plays tricks on you and it can't be truer than in "Backrooms."
The movie stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell and Robert Bobroczkyi. Don't dare miss it.
