Topacio enumerates ways to woo more Pinoys back to theaters

Attorney Ferdinand Topacio has a plan---and it looks to be a good one.

At the recent press conference of "Spring In Prague," the honcho of Borracho Films was asked about the effectiveness of lowering movie ticket prices in a bid to woo Pinoys back to the cinema.

Saying in effect that it's not as simple as that, he ended up citing other ways.

First is for the government to start with Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) movies by subsidizing its ticket prices in half to give more people the chance to watch all the entries instead of just one or two due to budget constraints.

"Para mapanood ng tao lahat ng entries at makita nila kung ano pa ang mga magagandang movies," he said. "Syempre kung sobrang mahal ng ticket, ang papanoodin lang nila ay yung pinaka-entertaining..."

Once people realize other entries that are also good, "ma-e-elevate aesthetic taste ng Pilipino (sa panonood ng pelikula)."

Topacio pointed out that the population of Korea---which now has the third most powerful film industry after Hollywood and Bollywood---isn't actually enough to sustain the success it enjoys.

But by passing a law that only permits the exhibition of foreign movies no more than 180 days a year, Korean filmmakers have to churn out more films. Ultimately, the robust competition resulted in better quality too.

Topacio also cited the government giving companies tax breaks if they make movies. This is one of the reasons the likes of Hyundai and Samsung became movie producers, to take advantage of that incentive.

"Our government should realize our movie industry is an industry," he said. "Para itong tourism or electronic industry na may potential din kumita para sa ating bayan (so dapat din itong pagyamanin)..."

Anyway, "Spring in Prague" opens in cinemas nationwide on Feb. 4.

The pre-Valentine offering is a heartfelt romantic drama set against the stunning landscapes of the Philippines and the historic winter charm of the Czech capital. A resort owner from the Philippines falls for a Czech tourist and follows her to Prague to discover whether their brief romance was more than just a holiday fling.

The movie stars Paolo Gumabao, Sara Sendeva, Elena Koslova, Marco Gomez, Ynah Zimmerman, Jessy Vidal, Sean Raval, Keahnna Reyes, Tori Topacio and Esel Ponce under the direction of Lester Dimaranan.

Topacio praised Paolo Gumabao for his compelling performance, citing the actor’s expressive range and dedication to his craft.

“Salamat sa mga papuri niyo. Kapag may trabaho ako, ibinibigay ko ang best ko. Before I report to the set, nagpupuyat ako to read the script. My aim is to be the best actor I can be,” shared Gumabao.

“Spring In Prague” will hold its premiere night on Jan. 19, 4 p.m. at Gateway Mall.
