A couple of years before the pandemic, Viva hot property Janine Tenoso was into songs meant for belter divas---and she even had a P-pop phase, OMG.
It's worth mentioning both since anyone who hears the singer-songwriter now would never have guessed about her early beginnings.
In a line, the past had been completely jettisoned.
Still, Janine doesn't regret that season since doing different genres helped her eventually discover her true voice.
"It was a business decision that had to be made at the time," she said of her early sound and image.
Recall that she was once dubbed as Viva's OST Princess for such songs as "Di Na Muli" (from the movie "Sid & Aya") and "Ulan" (from movie of same title).
Until Janine started collaborating with artists as Arthur Nery (on "Pelikula") and Cup of Joe ("Tingin") that eventually set the compass of her sound towards a different direction.
Janine admitted that songwriting is as important to her as singing. So, when this artist noticed she was singing more than writing songs, Janine knew a reinvention was needed.
"Hindi na ako happy," she said. "Gusto ko talaga magsulat."
And because she often writes songs inside her bedroom, the music ended up sounding vulnerable and sung that way too----for practical reasons.
"Hindi naman kasi ako pwede magsisigaw sa kwarto ko ng hatinggabi," she joked. "In the bedroom, you don't sing loud because you sing your thoughts to yourself. Why would I sing like a biritera when it was made from a place of vulnerability?"
Her journey as vocalist artist will be heard in the eponymously titled concert at New Frontier Theater on Sept. 26. Several sections of the venue for the concert are already sold out, proving that Janine is one of the most loved artists of her generation with nearly 7 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone.
Of course, Janine will sing songs from her latest release, the EP "Apat Na Buwan" featuring the single "Pikit Mata"
Her guest performers at the concert are Arthur, Cup of Joe, The Juans and Rob Deniel with a special appearance by Rabin Angeles.
