Gary V back as Jacob in limited run of 'Joseph The Dreamer'

Gary Valenciano

"Joseph The Dreamer" has such a special place in Gary Valenciano's heart  that he would work his schedule around the musical just so he could be part of it everytime.

He first played the title role in the 90s, and then the character Jacob, the father of Joseph, in 2020, 2022 and 2025.

Although both physically and emotionally draining, especially since he has no understudy this time, Gary doesn't mind since he believes in the message of the story.

"There's a particular line that I asked to be returned kasi tinanggal dahil masyadong mahaba," he said in an interview. "I look to the audience just before I sing 'Like Father, Like Son' and say, 'Joseph, God is using you to remind me that there is hope even in the worst of us.'"

In the story based on the Bible, Jacob's favorite son out of his 12 children is Joseph. However, evil falls on Joseph but he is redeemed by God in the end.

Does Gary have a favorite among his children? He has three namely Paolo, Gabriel and Kiana.

"There are moments when one of them seems to be my favorite but there's no all-time favorite," he said.

Gary said whenever he'd stay with Kiana in the US, her siblings would tease she is his favorite. But the other two would say the same about Gab whenever he makes Gary laugh; or about Paolo whenever they'd talk in-depth about movies and concerts.

Since we were able to watch all of "Joseph The Dreamer" runs through the years, we asked Gary why his performance this time seems to be the best of all so far.

Well, he pointed out that he once did all parts in the Joseph story for the Bible app Prayer.com. He said that doing so gave him a much deeper undedstanding where Jacob and Joseph are coming from, as well as the other brothers.

You can still catch Trumpets Inc's  "Joseph The Dreamer" at Carlos P Romulo Auditorium inside RCBC Plaza in Makati City on July 13, 18, 19 and 20.
