Alynna during 'Feeling Sexy Tonight' concert at Viva Cafe |
When Alynna of "Kahit Gano Kalaki"- fame sang the hit midway through her comeback concert at Viva Cafe few days ago, we didn't know what to think.
See, most artists reserve their signature song for finale (some even sing it twice by demand). But there's Alynna not going down the usual route. So, where was she taking us?
Alynna was serving up an adult contemporary show; one that's niche and personal. The repertoire had songs confined to vocal style from bygone era that suits her, served up to an audience many of whom were there anyway since her New Minstrels 5th Generation days. Among them were Marc Velasco, Liz Alindogan and Efren Reyes.
Alynna reminds us of singers as Sheena Easton and Melissa Manchester. They are all less stylistic, more intuitive with their vocals. That night, the Pinay singer owned her covers of "Magkayakap Sa Dilim" made lounge-ier than the original and "To Sir With Love" from so many decades ago; and drew love for her latest single penned by Rey Valera titled "Dapat Ba Akong Mangarap."
The highlight of the show was her tribute to the late Hajji Alejandro. The power of context came to full force when she shared stories about her long-time partner, including his last days.
Suddenly, the lines "Hindi ko rin inaasahan ang mga pangyayari/At dinaramdam ko rin ng husto ang pagkasawi ng ating pag-ibig/ Ngunit, kailangan tanggapin natin na ganito ang buhay/ Ibig ko lang malaman mo na mahal pa rin kita" from Hajji's iconic song "Tag-araw, Tag-Ulan" seemed almost unbearable to sing---and felt bittersweet to hear coming from Alynna who stood by him till the end.
She cried during the performance: not in a melodramatic way, but quietly the way the heart profoundly remembers the past. How Alynna was able to finish the song, and so beautifully too, is preserved in core memory.
Then again, she wouldn't end the show on a sad note. For "Tuloy Pa Rin Ako," meaningfully placed after the Hajji song, Alynna called back on stage her guest performers Jeri Violago and Christi Fider.
Earlier the two sang their originals ("Ako Na Sana" for him, "3rd Street," "Fake" for her) that remind us there's never a lack of talent in the OPM industry. They are surely on the brink of breakthrough and when they reign, the industry will remain in good hands.
We guess the concert title pertains to the mostly intimate song choices Alynna made. But it could also be about how she retained her svelte figure. Sana all talaga!
Alynna will have another show on June 14 at the Music Museum.
She is so back.
