Former Senator and showbiz stalwart Nikki Coseteng is set to reignite her passion for nationalist filmmaking, announcing plans to co-produce a sequel to her iconic 1989 movie "Sa Kuko Ng Agila (In the Eagle’s Claw)."

The original film, which sparked national dialogue, starred Coseteng alongside former President Joseph Estrada, featured a script by National Artist for Film Ricky Lee ("Himala," "Brutal"), and a haunting soundtrack by folk music legend Freddie Aguilar ("Anak").

Coseteng’s New Vision: A Warning Against "Becoming Asia’s Ukraine

The upcoming project, will tackle the contentious issue of the Philippines’ nine Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites, which Coseteng warns could potentially transform the country into "a possible Ukraine of Asia" if geopolitical tensions escalate.

"Art must reflect the struggles of our time," Coseteng declared at a press briefing, channeling the fiery spirit of her 1989 classic, which critiqued U.S. military presence and won acclaim for its unflinching patriotism.

This time, the film will blend veteran starpower with fresh faces. While Coseteng may take a supporting role, insiders hint at a lead pairing of rising young actress and young actor. Aguilar is also eyed to compose new anthems, merging his protest-music legacy with modern beats.

Flashback: The 1989 Film That Shook the Nation

"Sa Kuko Ng Agila" remains a cultural touchstone, celebrated for its bold critique of foreign military presence. Released months after the U.S. rejected new base terms, the film tackled the moral, socio-economic and political problems of hosting foreign military bases in the country.

Ricky Lee’s script, Aguilar’s stirring ballad "Agila," and Estrada and Coseteng’s fierce performances became emblematic of post-Marcos-era nationalist cinema.

Dr. Cecilio Pedro Champions PH-China Animation Alliance

Meanwhile, Dr. Cecilio K. Pedro, Hapee Toothpaste founder and apolitical as the FFCCCII honorary president, he emphasized at the Pandesal Forum of Kamuning Bakery Cafe the need for more trade and pop culture cooperation between the Philippines and China to promote peace.

Dr. Pedro had earlier suggested combining Filipino storytelling and animation talents with China’s cutting-edge technology and artistry, referencing global hits like "Ne Zha 2" which has become the world's No. 1 biggest box office animated film and the world's over-all No. 5 blockbuster film.

Dr. Pedro’s urged Philippines-China movies partnerships and other pop culture partnerships for many untapped potentials in cross-cultural projects.
