New Jimmy Bondoc song tears up Duterte supporters

Jimmy Bondoc

Singer and songwriter-turned-lawyer, and currently senatoriable, Jimmy Bondoc found himself suddenly writing a song recently after the arrest on ICC warrant of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

Titled "Ibalik Niyo Si Tatay Digong," Bondoc wrote the song in less than a day, and in tears.

"Di naman ako iyakin sa pulitika pero tumutulo luha ko magisa (nang sinulat ko yung kanta)," he said.

Bondoc sings the "viral" hit during gatherings to protest Duterte's arrest and he said it never fails to tear up attendees. Several Duterte supporters have also uploaded on social media recordings of the live performance of the song.

"Unang linyang nasulat ko sa kanta yung 'Tama Na, Sobra Na' recalling (protest chants in the time of) Martial Law," said the hitmaker behind "Let Me Be The One," "I Believe" and "Tuwing Umuulan."

Bondoc plans to visit Duterte in the Netherlands (where he is detained) after the elections.

Bondoc, Atty. Raul Lambino and Atty. Bobbet Torreon recently called for a press conference after filing a petition opposing the implementation of online voting for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

The group argued the proposed system lacks legal grounding and sufficient safeguards to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

The new online system which allows enrolled OFWs to vote remotely through a web-based platform is based on the Overseas Electronic Registration and Voting Act already approved by the House of Representatives.

Bondoc, Lambino and Torreon are calling for a return to manual voting, reiterating their concerns about deemed vulnerabilities of online voting.

The matter is now pending before the Supreme Court.
