Sam Verzosa |
Few minutes before Manila mayoralty bet Sam Verzosa took to the stage at a recent rally in his city where he is being endorsed by celebrities Jose Manalo and Wally Bayola, we had him all to ourselves and got to ask this one question.
Should you win, how will you combat corruption?
"Through transparency," he replied in a heartbeat. "I am all for Freedom of Information. Para malaman ng Manilenyo san napupunta ang pera."
It doesn't stop there. He wants money due to people delivered directly.
"Kapag diniretso kasi sa kanila, walang mababawas---kundi magrereklamo sila," the "Dear SV" host said. "Gawin nating parang salary."
He would lessen, if not totally disapprove, those kinds of projects from which unscrupulous public servants could potentially derive kickbacks.
"Yung tipong kahit maayos naman ang kalsada, ginigiba (para dun maka-kickback sa project)," Sam said.
The public servant cited a project during the pandemic wherein a rehabilitation of a facility was done while the more pressing concerns such as health, food security, employment went wanting.
Being a civil engineer, Sam asserts he is a problem solver. Still, he admits that, for now, he only sees the problem of and possible solutions to corruption from an outsider's point of view.
If (and when) elected mayor, he'll get a complete picture of what is needed to win the fight and give public trust back to government.
"Wala ng ibang paraan (para magawa ito) kundi ang baguhin ang mga namumuno," he said.
Sam dreams of making Manila a model city. He plans to put in place a system in everything that would benefit people not just during his term but beyond it.
Sam Verzosa has high ambitions---for his city and its people that he believes deserve its fruition.
