Jojo Mendrez |
If Revival King Jojo Mendrez weren't promoting "Nandito Lang Ako," his first original song, he could've released a version of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" and it would likely have made a killing in terms of streaming as some of the lyrics from that song fit his present circumstance.
"Do you think I'd crumble? Do you think I'd lay down and die? Oh, no, not I! I will survive..." goes the song.
Yesterday, mere days after meeting the press to officially launch his latest single, Jojo's team called for an "emergency" press conference to air their side on the latest development in the "MarJo" story.
"MarJo" is portmanteau for Mark (Herras) and Jojo being shipped by some fans romantically. However, after the PMPC Star Awards for Television 2025 last Sunday, the hashtag became #RIPMarJo.
It's said Mark "walked out" of the awards ceremony where he was supposed to have been co-presentor of Jojo. At the emergency presscon, Jojo's team said it was fortunate Rainier Castillo was able to fill in on the 11th hour.
The story grows more interesting when it's pointed out that Mark and Jojo: 1) started their careers on "StarStruck;" 2) have each been sighted with Jojo recently on separate occasions; and 3) are rumored to be apples of the eye (albeit successively?) of the singer-businessman.
Jojo has said definitely that he and Mark (and for that matter, even he and Rainier) were neither a couple nor even dating.
He added that because of the walk-out incident, he is severing ties with Mark as it was the straw that broke the camel's back.
"Mas magandang wala na (kaming koneksyon) dahil hindi ko na alam san to papunta," Jojo said.
The singer alleged Mark had "borrowed" substantial amount of money from him; and that the former, at one point, felt "threatened" when the latter remarked he'd do something to one of his properties if he were "discarded" by Jojo.
Do these things have anything to do with Rainier? No one knows for sure because as of writing, Mark hasn't aired his side of the story about any of these things and we would, of course, allot equal space to him when he does.
Jojo reiterated it's not about the money. Rather, he was taken aback that despite being a good friend to Mark, the actor-dancer still supposedly----suddenly---left him hanging at the awards ceremony.
Nevertheless, Jojo is brushing off the incident and he is moving on.
After Holy Week, the Revival King will shoot the music video for "Nandito Lang Ako" featuring Nora Aunor in a cameo performance, as well as another "surprise" celebrity.
Jojo will also record his version of Tina Paner's "Tamis Ng Unang Halik" round that time.
Asked why he is still doing revivals when he has already released an original song, Jojo said the series of covers will serve as "breather" until the next original release.
"Nandito Lang Ako" was written for Jojo and produced by multi-awarded songwriter Jonathan Manalo.
