Gerald Santos: 'Courage' concert stays true to concept

Gerald Santos

Even after all he has achieved here and abroad through the years, Gerald Santos still has a lot to offer especially as concert performer.

In his recent "Courage" concert st SM North EDSA Skydome, the singer showed he hasn't lost his touch when it comes to ballads ("Maghintay Ka Lamang") and Broadway tunes ("Defying Gravity") while open to take on today's hits ("APT"), soul R&B (his latest single "Hubad") and even pop rock ("From Now On").

Indeed, there's something for everyone in any Gerald Santos concert, thanks to well-rounded repertoire (this one, with writer and director Rommel Ramilo). The selections not only guaranteed to make him shine but also push the envelope so that even fans who know him well enjoy the reinvention.

His guest performers in "Courage" were thoughtfully picked for variety: Sheryn Regis (biritera), Erik Santos (pop/R&B and contest champion like Gerald), Elise, Aster and Enzo Almario (young artists) and Aicelle Santos (theater/pop). Their vocal prowess complemented Gerald's and kept him on his toes throughout the show.

"Courage" will likely go down in the history of Gerald's career as one of his most important ventures. Aside from being sold out during what's considered low season for concerts, it marked the launch of Courage Movement to help victims of sexual abuse.

This is the reason that despite Sandro Muhlach neither singing nor dancing that night, his presence in the show was significant, relevant. Recall that the actor remains in the headlines for his sexual harassment case with Gerald right on his heels for the latter's own legal complaint.

The VTR presentation at the start of the show served to underscore Gerald's status in the industry, the inspiring journey he is on with its ups and downs, and the vitality he possesses as one who has lasted this long---and counting.

That rousing worship song ("Goodness of God") in the end and the tribute production numbers in memory of Liam Payne and Mercy Sunot seemingly say Gerald knows that he can---and he does!---use his talents not just for himself but also to glorify, to give credit to whom it is due.

Our only regret is that it was our first Gerald Santos concert. Having the reputation to hold concept shows that deliver on promise, it surely won't be the last.

And he will be there.

Looking at Gerald, we know tomorrow belongs to those who have courage.
