Epic body-horror gem 'The Substance' goes for broke

Scene from 'The Substance'

If you’re not interested in watching “The Substance” in cinemas, or it somehow slipped under your radar, you will be missing out big time, buddy, and likely even regret it later, lady

We attended the Philippine premiere of the movie last week and saw for ourselves that it really is a masterpiece in the body-horror genre.

From start to finish, “The Substance” will take you in, er, hook line and sinker without sparing crumbs, given its easy-to-follow-but-still-intriguing narrative; the graphic audacity of the gore that goes for broke; the insanely epic acting of Demi Moore, Dennis Quaid and Margaret Qualley; and the subliminal message on the cost of selling your soul to the vanity devil.

Did I just say too much there? Well, it’s because “Substance” is over the top too. In the movie, Elisabeth Sparkle is fired from her job because boss Harvey deems her Jurassic. When an opportunity presents to reverse her age by taking a mysterious substance, Elisabeth goes for it. However, she is only reborn as young Sue for seven days before reverting, then they would have to repeat the process ad infinitum. Sounds basic, right? How can anyone bungle that up, eh? You’d be surprised.:)

Our suggestions: Get your business in the loo done before the movie starts. And maybe eat just light before watching—-and don’t eat while watching? You’ve been warned.

Oh, and don’t make declarations like “I just won’t look when it gets a bit too much.” We assure that you will look and, yes, things will get too much many times over.

Expect a fantastic ending. A mind-blowing one (wink, wink).

"The Substance” won Best Screenplay at Cannes Film Festival 2024. It is also an official selection in the Toronto Film Festival.

Directed by Coralie Fargeat (“Revenge”), CreaZion Studios brings “The Substance” to Philippine cinemas on Sept. 25.
