The buzz about 'When Magic Hurts'

"When Magic Hurts" is yet to have its theatrical run nationwide but already, there is a growing buzz surrounding the movie with people who've seen it gushing over the gorgeous location, the commendable acting ensemble and the heartwarming story reminiscent of classic Pinoy rom-coms from the late '90s.

We attended the special screening of the movie at SM The Block last April 15 so we totally understand why it's fast becoming the Pinoy "it" movie to watch this summer. Earlier, director Gabby Ramos was raving about the beauty of Atok, Benguet showcased in "When Magic Hurts." True to his words, it's almost as if the shoot was done in Taiwan or Korea---anywhere but a tropical country that is the Philippines (with summer climate enough to leave anyone wilted!).

Because Atok is in the mountains, sunrays hit differently, giving the entire look of the movie that "imported" feel especially the beautiful flowers just everywhere you look. We marvel at how the actors must have endured the cold to deliver their lines without shivering especially in scenes shot outdoors.

We knew given how much seasoned actors Claudine Barretto, Dennis Padilla and Angelica Jones are that they will deliver the goods in playing their roles, no problem. What turned out to be pleasant surprise were the works of lead stars Beaver Magtalas, Mutya Orquia and Maxine Trinidad in the essay of their love triangle. Gabby did not hesitate giving them meldoramatic scenes that would have fazed any other newbie actor, but not the three. Viewers will have to watch out for Beaver's highlight scene when he just lets it all out. This guy is not just leading man material because of his looks, but also for his promising acting skills.

"When Magic Hurts" is aptly titled---we can say that now. Far from being just a tweetum movie, there are important messages about love here that are not seen just through color-tinted lenses. From mere puppy love, the teen characters graduate into an understanding of the depth of their relationship along with the responsibilities (and sacrifices) that go with it.

"We had an intense lock-in and spent significant time together, which I believe, deepened our bond. Even after filming wrapped up, we continued to hang out. So, the strong connection among the three of us remains intact," Beaver was quotes have said about their earnest performance and palpable chemistry.

Also in the cast are Archie Adamos, Soliman Cruz, Pantene Palanca, Aileen Papin, Mohaira Sanama, Julian Roxas, Denna Bautista, Whitney Tyson, Blumark Roses, Cassie Kim, Josie Tagle, Kris Valdellon, and Aryanna Barretto.

"When Magic Hurts” is a magical movie about young love. Beaver plays Ernesto Buenvaventura, a loving son and brother who is humble and obedient. His paths cross with that of Olivia (Mutya), an orphan who was once a believer in magic but is now disillusioned.

Meanwhile, Maxine plays Trixie Callejo, a strong-willed young lady who loves to learn and explore new things. She is quite adventurous and willing to take on new challenges but is also determined to do everything to get what she wants at any cost. With her intelligence, she has managed to get into prestigious schools in the United States with the help of her parents who will also do everything to give to their only child what she wants for herself.

"When Magic Hurts" is set to open in cinemas nationwide in May.
