Educational or potentially controversial?
At the press conference of "Kampilan, The Untold Story of Kalip Pulaka," we found ourselves asking that question since the movie is about Philippine hero LapuLapu of the Battle of Mactan---but presented in the essence of a "darangan," Maranao's oral tradition.
Produced by Sultanate Films International, the 15-minute teaser of "Kampilan" presented to media that day, shows the Battle of Mactan of LapuLapu---also known as Kalip Pulaka, the valiant Datu (chieftain) of the island of Mactan in Cebu---based on the chronicles of Antonio Pigafetta, a Venetian explorer who documented it. It was a pivotal moment in Philippine history during which Kalip Pulaka and his warriors faced the invading Spanish colonizers led by naval officer Ferdinand Magellan.
"Kampilan," to be shot soon, reveals the valor and unwavering spirit of Mactan’s defenders against the encroaching forces, including the treachery of Rajah Humabon, the King of Cebu, who aligned with the Spanish intruders.
"Kampilan, The Untold Story of Kalip Pulaka" is produced by Sultan Bob Datimbang and Shiekh Abdulrazzaq Siddiq. Executive producer is Director Cosaine Derogongan, former Police Provincial Director of Lanao Del Sur and currently the Bureau Director of National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF), under the Office of the President and DILG.
This movie about the first Filipino warrior in the Philippines is written and directed by Angelo Carpio, and the brainchild of Cosaine Derogongan, the director of the National Commission of Muslim Filipinos - Bureau of Peace and Conflict Resolution.
Will the story stray from what many Filipinos already know based on history books? Or will it compelement/supplement? That remains to be seen.
Till then, here are the highlights of that interview:
