Cherry Pie Picache on child actor Euwenn Mikaell: 'Matandang bata'

Euwenn Mikaell

He is good looking, yes, though that's not the only thing going for child actor Euwenn Mikaell.

According to highly respected actress Cherry Pie Picache at the press conference for the Metro Manila Film Festival entry "Firefly" produced by GMA Pictures and GMA Public Affairs, the GMA Sparkle talent is also charming and "interesting."

"Matandang bata," Cherry Pie said of Euwenn. "Siguro dahil madami siyang nakakasamang adults, yung pagiisip niya nakakasabay na din sa amin."

She added that the boy still has a lot to learn in acting---"madami pang ide-develop, malaki pa ang potential," was how Cherry Pie put it---yet it should be pointed out that in "Firefly," "eto yung first major project niya at andami ding nangyayari sa kanya,  ang laki ng requriement ng role kay Euwenn." So, in all, the little guy who was previously cast in the Kapuso series "Cain at Abel," "One of the Baes" and "The Write One," actually did very well in the movie.

The story of "Firefly" begins with the adult Tonton (played by Dingdong Dantes) being interviewed by a skeptical journalist after winning the National Book Award. The interview unravels the origin of his stories.

Elay (Alessandra de Rossi) is a mother who loves to share bedtime stories with her son to encourage him to be brave and make the most out of life.

Tonton (Euwenn) is a 10-year-old boy who is inquisitive, sweet and smart but often bullied and ridoculed by the kids in school.

To encourage Tonton, Elay tells him a story of bravery set in a magical island filled with fireflies. She tells him that the island is real and that you could make a wish if you ever made it there. In an old notebook, Elay draws a map to the island. And in his heart, Tonton forms a plan to get there and wish for one thing: to be brave.

On the road, he meets three strangers who will either help him or hinder his request.

It is said that the hardest co-actors to work with are children and animals. But Cherry Pie said it's also up to adult actors to work around that.

"Working with a child actor, you need to establish rapport, a relationship with them para magkaroon ng scenes na maganda," she said.

The actress added that when you see everybody working so hard to achieve the same objective, everything usually falls into place.

"At ang 'Firefly,' hindi ito yung klase ng pelikula na eeksena ka lang, okay na. Sa umpisa pa lang, pagbasa mo pa lang ng script, you know you have to prepare."

Also in the cast are Ysabel Ortega, Miguel Tanfelix, Epy Quizon, Yayo Aguila, Kokoy de Santos, and Max Collins.

Directed by Zig Dulay, "Firefly" opens in cinemas on Dec. 25.
