How Piolo Pascual designs the 'Ultimate' concert experience

After decades of holding concerts here and overseas, you'd think Piolo Pascual doesn't need to think much about repertoire anymore, right?

Wrong. At the recent press conference for his "An Ultimate Night With Piolo" concert happening at the Newport Performing Arts Theater on Oct. 20, the singer actor revealed how he and his team come up with lineup of songs for such events.

"First of all, I already know at this point what songs I can do well," he said. "So, if I don't feel comfortable with a song pitch, I don't do it no matter if it's 'uso.'"

"Also, I always just think of giving my audience a good time. I already know who they are so hindi na mahirap isipin kung ano ang magugustuhan nila sa hindi."

Knowing that no man's an island even on the concert stage, the singer-actor carefully picked the guest performers at "An Ultimate Night With Piolo." They include Erik Santos, Arnel Pineda, Jericho Rosales, Inigo Pascual, and a surprise guest.

The show will be directed by his "tatay-tatayan" in show business, no less than the legendary Johnny Manahan. Piolo said that they know each other so well everything they do onstage is based on trust and full confidence.

Shortly after the concert, Piolo heads abroad for a five-stop concert tour in the U.S.A. and Canada. By then, he would have released his latest album composed of original songs that see him duet with Juris, Morissette, Yeng Constantino, KZ Tandingan, Moira dela Torre, Kya and Regine Velasquez.

Then it's full blast promotion for "Mallari," his first horror movie. It has made it to the list of official entries of the coming Metro Manila Film Festival in December. Piolo revealed a "sign" prompted him to accept the project despite his already busy schedule.

"Hindi ko talaga siya inisip gawin kasi nga my plate was full even before it can be pitched to me," he said. "However, on set of another project with some co-actors, we got to randomly talk about serial killers in the Philippines. When I learned that Filipino Catholic priest Juan Severino Mallari is the first documented serial killer in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial period, I bolted right up and told my managers to allow the producers to make a pitch."

Is it true Piolo asked the producer how much their working budget is for "Mallari?"

Well, yes, Piolo said. But it's not that he is "snobbish" when it comes to that. After all, he has done projects he believes in, pro bono. Rather, he wanted to make sure that the movie "Mallari" can be fleshed out  without compromise to its integrity.

"Mallari" marks the first time Piolo will be a part of the MMFF once again since "Dekada '70" in 2002.

In Netflix Philippines' first-ever Christmas ID, it was revealed that Piolo is one of the lead stars of the upcoming Netflix Original series "Replacing Chef Coco" starring alongside Sam Milby and Alessandra de Rossi. The series will be out on Netflix by next month.
