Philstagers Films reveal 'Ako si Ninoy' offering led by JK Labajo in the title role

No less than JK Labajo leads the "Ako si Ninoy" cast of Philstagers Films revealed Jan. 22 at the press launch held at PSF Blackbox Theater in Manila.

The late senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr. is a modern-day hero. The musical traces the lives of 11 individuals in contemporary Philippines, and how they relate to his public persona and private character.

The other cast members are Sarah Holmes, Johnrey Rivas, Mario Mortel, Cassy Legazpi, Joaquin Domagoso, Nicole Laurel, JM Yosures, Adelle Barrientos, Vean Olmedo, Jomar Tanada, Brae Luke Quintate, Bodjie Pascua, Jim Paredes, Pinky Amador, Lovely Rivero, Tuesday Vargas, Donita Nose, Sarah Javier, John Gabriel, Carla Lim, Brylle Mondejar, Chris Lim, Sharmaine Suarez, Lance Raymundo and Miss Azenith Briones.

"Ako si Ninoy" is a film by the award-winning Vince Tanada.

At the event, Vince said that while he is not out to to hurt the feelings of certain people, if it happens then so be it because "the truth hurts."

"We merely want to tell the truth," he said in Filipino, adding that he interviewed members of the Aquino family, most importantly, the late President and Ninoy's wife Corazon Aquino.

Not a usual biographical film, the narrative is character-driven, redolent of current issues and historical reflections. An overseas Filipino worker (OFW),  housewife, a teacher, a journalist, a labor leader, an activist, a doctor, a student, a teen star, a war veteran, and a child hero lead parallel lives, single and collective, and told in episodic style. This is reflected on the screen, woven in a tapestry of entwining stories that bear the stuff of heroism that suggests there's a Ninoy Aquino in every Filipino.

This early, "Ako si Ninoy" has already created such a buzz that aside from screening in local cinemas, the musical will also be shown abroad including the Middle East, the United Kingdom, Australia and many more.

The movie also uses JK's biggest hit "Buwan" as its main theme song.
