They find ways

Directors falling in love with actors are not new in show business. 

In our younger days, when life was so much simpler and the gay community still didn’t have all the confusing initials that get longer every year, there were already romantic affairs between directors and actors in tinseltown.

There was this box-office director and line producer that worked closely with the owners of this now iconic film outfit who fell deeply in love with a then teenage actor, the relative of a more popular actor that was part of a widely followed love team. The director had a heart for underdogs and he fell for the charms of this actor who eventually proved himself, and who outlived the career of his more popular relative.

This late great artist was also known to fall in love with his actors, and although he never confirmed or denied his amorous entanglements, people who knew about these had very high regard for this director and will never talk about it. Almost all the men in this director’s life were launched in outstanding films.

There was also a group of young directors who were close friends who had their own interesting actor partners. Director fell for the charm of this teenage actor who eventually became a popular comedy actor, a variety show host, and a politico. He remains the greatest love of this director’s life even if they have long parted ways. The good friend of this director, who was not as opinionated and intense as the former, quietly had a romantic affair with a talent who eventually transformed himself into one of the most sought after character actors today. This director sadly passed on. 

Then there is this once terror director and his not so young lover who continue to remain active up to the present.  His actor lover is always part of every project, as if it is an unwritten rule that all line producers are aware of, and they never question the director because of fear of being verbally assaulted.

Perhaps the most colourful of all these director-talent love affairs is the one between this director, who is a patron of all the invasive procedures that are available in the market just to look younger and cover up his many physical insecurities, and this no name talent that he plucked out from an impoverished community.  But because this director has become influential by some stroke of luck, his paramour, who is rumoured to be gifted with an immense third leg that his director-mentor-benefactor so adores, constantly takes part in all the perks that the director gets. The gifted twink has also become director’s official chaperone when he is on official travel overseas.  Luck is on this talent’s side because he is now being launched in a movie that has international potential. We just hope that this talent be put on an intense good manners, right conduct, etiquette and proper decorum workshop right away because his demeanor still reminds many of the director’s friends of the stenchy quarters he was plucked out from.

Then there is this director who still has so many debts to settle, who has fallen madly, deeply and truly in love with a talent that he gave a breakthrough role during the onslaught of the pandemic. These days, despite having cut the number of his production team, director found a way to include talent in his production entourage as apprentice and then gives talent exposure as an actor, too.  Talent now lives comfortably in the director’s new condo unit. 

Oh well, just like the  tagline of one of the most stable financial institutions we have, these directors find ways. Perhaps a movie title of Dame Rita Gomez’s encapsulates it all: Gamitin Mo AKo.
